While teaching materials are required, these may or may not include textbooks and workbooks. Rather than purchasing some boring, dumbed-down, politically correct textbook, we use "living books" to teach reading, history, and science. Often, we can borrow them for free through our library's inter-library loan program. The 'net is full of free worksheets if I want to use one, but most of the time we prefer other methods such as narration, copywork, and hands-on activities using household materials.

The more one breaks away from doing "school-at-home", the less money one will need to spend to effectively educate one's children at home.
